BURTON CITY COUNCIL APPROVES ANIMAL CONTROL ORDINANCE, ROAD INTERLOCAL AGREEMENT

The Burton City Council approved an updated animal control ordinance and an inter-local agreement for road repairs at a short meeting Tuesday.

The approved ordinance will allow the city to better enforce its animal control rules and regulations.

The ordinance does not change the city’s status as a bird sanctuary, so the town’s two resident peacocks, Percy and Chester, will remain protected. The two peacocks had been the topic of debate at Burton council meetings for several months.

City Secretary Angela Harrington said the ordinance, written by City Attorney Aaron Kleinschmidt, will be enforced by the city’s police officer once one is hired. She said the city hopes to start accepting applications for the position after the beginning of the new year.

Also in session Tuesday, the council approved an inter-local agreement between the city and Washington County for repairs and improvements to the corner of West Texas and North Railroad Streets, by the post office. According to a verbal quote from Washington County Road and Bridge Engineer Ross McCall, materials for the repairs will cost $2,200.

During Harrington’s report to the council, she said the council will begin a recognition program to acknowledge community members at council meetings. She said future council meetings will begin by recognizing something that has been accomplished in the city by a local citizen or organization.  She encouraged the community to let city officials know of anything that might be worthy of special recognition.

The council also approved:

  • A $38,550 project quote dated August 12th from HDU Services, for the West Texas Street bridge project.  The project will install a new 6-inch water line on the bridge.
  • A resolution providing for votes allocated for the election of the Washington County Appraisal District Board of Directors.

  1. The City Council needs to focus less on peacocks and a police officer (not needed) to fit in a patrol car with payments left behind. The Police Dept. does not make any money.

Focus on properly repairing streets and other things to attract people to the city.
