CITY OF BRENHAM DISPUTING GAS PRICES FROM WINTER STORM

The City of Brenham is disputing pricing numbers from its gas provider as they relate to Winter Storm Uri.

Following an emergency meeting today (Thursday) where Brenham City Councilmembers met for an hour in executive session, the council unanimously moved to authorize City Manager James Fisher and City Attorney Carey Bovey to take the legal steps necessary to protect the city’s financial integrity and customers.

Fisher explained after the meeting that the city is disputing pricing information it received from West Texas Gas, Inc. pertaining to last month’s freeze.  He could not speak on the exact nature of the pricing figures, saying they will likely change and could potentially be subject to litigation.

Update @ 10:15 a.m. Friday: KWHI reached out Friday morning to WTG, who stated they would not release the pricing numbers due to them being part of a contractual matter between WTG and the city.

Fisher believes the city has a solid gas supply contract, and does not expect much impact to customers.

Brenham is one of many other cities facing massive gas and utility bills after the winter event.  The City of Sealy was charged $2,064,000 for the natural gas used by its 1,300 customers, compared to an average monthly bill of $70,000 to $100,000.

When asked to provide an estimate on what an average consumer’s next bill would look like, Fisher said customers’ bills will be “similar to the ones they normally receive,” adding that bills will follow their normal cycle.
