CUBS FALL IN HOME FINALE

The last home game of 2014 was not what the Brenham Cubs envisioned.  The Cubs committed four errors that lead to five unearned runs, as Huntsville upset the Cubs, 7-4 at Firemen’s Park, Tuesday night.

The game got underway with plenty of celebration, as the Cubs’ honored their parents and the four seniors playing in their final home games: Tyler Watts, Teddy Hoffman, Braden Baird and Dakota Brewton.

It was also Little League night with former Brenham Cub and Washington County Little League pitching star Jon Peters throwing out the first pitch.

Brenham (18-8/13-2) gained the early lead in the bottom of the second with Brewton’s rbi-double scoring Rayne Richard, while Kendall Swonke’s single scored Brewton.

The Hornets rallied for two unearned runs in the top of the third.  Huntsville reeled off three-straight hits—all coming after a two-out passed ball on a third strike.

Back-to-back rbi-singles by Richard and Brewton scored Hoffman and Caleb Hill, giving the Cubs a 4-2 lead after three innings.

Huntsville tied the game in the fifth.  With two outs and no one on base, the Hornets got back-to-back doubles from Robert White and Tanner Holley, followed by a single by Hoke Byrd.

The Hornets picked up two more unearned runs in the sixth inning on three Cubs’ errors.

The Hornets added a run in the seventh on Byrd’s solo home run.  Byrd was 4-for-4 on the night.

Side-armer Drayton Pittmon went the distance to get the win for Huntsville.  Lester (0-1) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, giving up two unearned runs, while not giving up a hit in an-inning-and-a-third, but falling victim to three fielding errors.

Brewton led the Cubs’ offense with a single, double and two runs batted in.
