CUBS FAVORITE TO TAKE DISTRICT BY DCTF

Coach Elliot Allen

The Brenham Cubs are the early pick to win their new district by the bible of Texas football, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

The writers and editors of DCTF have picked the Cubs to take first in their new district, 13/5A Division II, under new head coach Elliot Allen.

The Cubs return nine starters from their 2017 team (four offense; five defense) which went 6-5 and qualified for the district playoffs, their fourteenth-straight playoff trip.

They enter District 13/5A II with a lot of question marks, including the teams they will now face.  Gone are long-time familiar district foes, like Waller, Magnolia and Huntsville.  Now on the district schedule are Elgin, Bastrop, Marble Falls, Cedar Creek, Georgetown Eastview and new comers Leander Glenn and Pflugerville Weiss.

Among the returning starters are receiver Andre Gilmore and running back Tyree Jackson, along with offensive linemen Bobby Mathis and Hunter Fritz.  Gilmore, Jackson, Colby Watts and Lonterrious McClain will help lead the defense.

DCTF says: “If their success is to continue, the Cubs must find a new crop of playmakers.  Gilmore and Jackson will take on more featured roles and will benefit from the work done in the trenches by Mathis and Fritz.  Watts leads an athletic defense that will also rely on Dane Houk, McClain and Daylonn McCowan.”

The projections for the 2018 District 13/5A race: 1-Brenham Cubs; 2-Elgin; 3-Eastview; 4-Bastrop; 5-Marble Falls; 6-Leander Glenn; 7-Cedar Creek; 8-Pflugrville Weiss.

The Cubs open their season Friday night, August 31, at Cubs Stadium against former long-time district foe, Magnolia West – a favorite to make a playoff spot in District 8/5A Division I.

Coach Allen and the Cubs will host ‘Meet the Cubs’ night, Wednesday, August 22nd at Cubs Stadium at 7:00 p.m.

As always, Cubs Football can be heard live on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
