DPS TO BEGIN LIMITED REOPENING OF DRIVER’S LICENSE OFFICES THIS WEEK

Starting tomorrow (Tuesday), the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will begin reopening driver’s license offices around the state with limited services.

Offices will reopen only for appointments, and only for customers who are in need of driving tests or do not have a Texas driver’s license, CDL, learner’s permit, or ID card.

License renewals will not be offered, but Governor Greg Abbott’s previous disaster declaration allows for the extension of any identification cards, licenses, or election certificates that expire on or after March 13th.  The extension will remain valid for 60 days after DPS announces that the extension period has been lifted and normal operations have resumed.

The first phase of the reopening includes offices in DPS’ northwest and west Texas regions.  Phase 2 will reopen offices in DPS’s south and central Texas regions Friday, with appointments for those regions becoming available starting tomorrow at 1 p.m.  Offices in DPS’ north and southeast Texas regions, including Washington County, will not reopen until June 3rd, but customers can begin scheduling appointments Friday at 1 p.m.

Should Phase 4 be implemented, customers will be allowed to schedule an appointment for all office transactions anywhere in the state.  DPS will announce details on this phase, which is expected to begin midsummer, at a later date.

To schedule an appointment, go online to www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense.
