FIRE MARSHAL WARNS ABOUT FIREWORKS

While there are plenty of fireworks displays planned for the Fourth of July, some still want to put on their own show.

That’s a concern for Brenham Fire Marshal Alan Finke who continues to warn that fireworks are dangerous and people who use them can be badly injured.

Finke says even sparklers, while they seem harmless, can generate heat of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Brenham, like almost every other community in Texas, has an ordinance prohibiting the sale of fireworks within the city or within 5000 feet  outside the city limits.  Sealed, unopened packages of fireworks may be legally transported within the city.  Finke warns however, that  if authorities find any opened fireworks, they will be confiscated.  The Brenham Fire and Police departments will file charges in municipal court against those individuals found in possession of open packages, or actually discharging fireworks within the city.

Finke also says that while there has been substantive rainfall in Brenham and Washington County in the past few months, the recent heat and wind have combined to dry out grass and brush.  The possibility of wildfire is once again on the rise.

Finke says that if you have your own fireworks display, to make sure you use them safely and not mar the holiday with a needless injury of fire.  Anyone having questions about fireworks are encouraged to call the Brenham Fire Department at 337 7300.
