GOV. ABBOTT CLOSES DRIVER LICENSE OFFICES, EXTENDS EXPIRATION DATES

Texas DPS Driver Licenses Offices across the state have been ordered closed until further direction by Governor Greg Abbott.

In light of this, DPS has extended the expiration date of Texas identification cards, driver licenses, commercial driver licenses (CDL), and election identification certificates.

If the expiration date on an identification card, license, or election certificate falls on or after March 13, 2020, Abbott’s disaster declaration allows that date to be extended by 60 days.

The extension only applies to the expiration date.  A person who is ineligible to drive because of an active enforcement action—including suspension, revocation, or denial—can only use their card for identification purposes.

The office closure does not apply to people seeking an initial CDL.  Many offices are designated as CDL sites, and will offer testing by appointment only.  The appointment remains valid if a person has a CDL skills test scheduled.

Licenses and IDs can still be renewed by mail, by phone at 1-866-DL-RENEW, or online at http://texas.gov.
