PROPERTY APPRAISAL NOTICES MAILED, VALUES ON THE RISE

The Washington County Appraisal District sent out 21,785 notices of appraisal to residents last week.

As expected, property appraisals in the county are going up an average of 10 percent this year.

Chief Appraiser Willy Dilworth says there are several factors driving up the value of both residential and commercial property in the county.  He says homes, land and even older buildings in downtown Brenham have been selling at previously unheard of prices.

The taxable appraised property inside the City of Brenham went up 7.8 percent, from $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion.  Taxable property in the county increased 8.9 percent, from last year’s $3.2 billion to $3.5 billion this year.

Property valuations in the Brenham Independent School District show a 9 percent increase over last year, which includes over $49 million in new construction, improvements and new personal property.  The total taxable property in BISD is now over $2.9 billion, up from 2.6 billion in 2016.

For Burton ISD, taxable property valuations jumped 12 percent, or just over $51 million, for a total of over $448 million.

Taxable property in the Blinn College taxing district has increased 8.8 percent in value, rising by just under $298 million to over $3.5 billion.

The state comptroller’s office requires that the local appraisals fall between 95 percent and 105 percent of the value the state places on the county’s property.

  1. Can someone please tell me what benefit there is to having how many hundred tax appraisal districts throughout the state, when each one of them uses the talking point of the Comptroller is making us raise values?

  2. unless we, as a community stand up to this highway robbery, they will continue to rip us all off. We keep letting them get away with it. It is time to put a stop to it. Wonder what would happen if, as a community, we all decided not to pay? Where are they getting there sales figures from?? my appraisal is well over what i paid for my home 2 years ago!

  3. My 32 year old mobile home is now valued at 200 per cent more than what I paid for it in 1985 with only maintenance repair done on it; this does not include any land acreage!

  4. Why should we pay 105 percent of the value, that is robbery. Where are they getting their figures at? It seems everybody’s appraisals are more than what the property is worth.
