SOMERVILLE ISD BREAKING GROUND ON NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Somerville Independent School District is breaking ground on their new elementary school today (Thursday).

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. at the future location of the school- 700 8th Street in Somerville.

The current elementary school is over 70 years old.

The new elementary school campus is being built across from the football stadium and next to the high school. The new construction is expected to cost anywhere from $9.5 million to $10.5 million.

The new elementary will be designed to hold grades Pre-K through 6th grade, with three classrooms per grade level.  Also included will be two science labs, an art room, a music room, several breakout rooms, a media center, and office space.  There will be a new gym and a new cafeteria, which will serve the entire district.

The $11 million bond package that made construction on the new school possible passed last spring. The remaining money will be used to relocate the baseball field.

The new school is set to open in fall of 2018.

  1. Amazing that they can break ground on a school in a district that is now “Accredited – Probation”. Much better way to use the tax payer money would be to actually use it for educating these children rather than a “pretty classroom and building”.

    1. Think it might be possible that antiquated facilities contributed to the poor performance of the school? I don’t remember feeling particularly motivated to learn during the warm months at the old BHS bunker when the 40 yr. old A/C unit ‘went out.’
