CUBS ROLL PAST MAGNOLIA, 8-0 IN 20/5A SHOWDOWN

The Brenham Cubs have taken a two-game lead into the second half of District 20/5A play, as they rolled past Magnolia, 8-0 in a showdown of the district’s top two teams, Tuesday night.

Chandler Jozwiak

Chandler Jozwiak painted a masterpiece on the mound, limiting the Bulldogs to just two hits over seven innings.  Jozwiak struck out a dozen Magnolia batters, while issuing just one walk.

“I felt really good out there,” said Jozwiak.  “Coach Marek called an awesome game.  He was trusting everything I had.”

“Against a good hitting team like Magnolia, you really have to hit your spots.  If you miss, they’ll capitalize on it.”

Coach Lanny Williams said Jozwiak was “…phenominal.  He was on fire.  He wanted it from a long time ago.  This was a game Chandler was definitely up for.  He pitched with a lot of emotion and when he does that he’s hard to beat.”

Zach Marshal crosses the plate for the Cubs first run.

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, on a pair of throwing errors by the Bulldogs.

Zach Marshall then gave the Cubs a 4-0 lead with two-run double.  Marshall led the Cubs’ offense with four hits, two runs scored and three runs batted in.

“I was really focusing on trying to drive the runs in, whether it was that double or a little bloop single, whatever it takes.”

The Cubs added four insurance runs in the seventh.  Eric Wellmann, who had two hits on the night, doubled.  Marshall and Darvis Watson drove home runs with singles, and Pierce Weiss capped the scoring with a two-run double.

“The beginning of the game was frustrating.  Some crazy un-characteristic stuff happened to us.  But what I love about our guys is they didn’t break—they just handled it.”

The Cubs finish the first half of district 7-0, with a two-game lead over the Bulldogs (5-2).

“We’ve got to get better,” said Williams.  “We can’t be satisfied.  I know these guys won’t be satisfied.  We harp on the little things, and these guys are buying into that.”

The Cubs will be back in Magnolia, Friday night when they face Magnolia West at 7:00.
