SPARKS CAUSE NUMEROUS GRASS FIRES AT TEXAS WORLD SPEEDWAY

An electrical malfunction sparked several grass fires Tuesday evening at the Texas World Speedway in south Brazos County.

South Brazos County Fire Chief Chet Barker says the fires were reported just before 6:30 p.m., and likely started at a utility substation in the back area of the speedway.

Sparks from power lines set off at least four fires on the speedway grounds.  Firefighters were able to contain the fires and had the situation under control within 30 minutes of the first 9-1-1 call.

Barker says the only damage was to the power system at the speedway.
