Interim Police Chief Lloyd Powell, joined by several other members of the department, spoke on the efforts of on-duty police officers, combined with sheriff’s deputies, constables, DPS troopers and all other first responders, to get the suspect in custody, tend to the wounded and protect the public from any further incident.

Powell gave special acknowledgement to Detective Connor Caskey and Corporal Alex Saenz, who jumped on the cab of the 18-wheeler that drove into the building in order to get the driver out and prevent the truck from causing more damage or injuries.

Powell said those who responded that day put their lives on the line.

Powell talked about the collaboration between all the agencies that were called out, saying everyone did their part.  He said it is a privilege to be counted among them.

Following Powell’s comments, the council and audience stood and applauded all of the officers present.  Mayor Atwood Kenjura said Brenham is “tremendously fortunate” to have people like them serving the community.

Powell said the department will present formal officer commendations at a later date.

The recognition was the focal point of a brief meeting for the council.  In their only regular session business, councilmembers voted to terminate the city’s contract with Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP for delinquent property tax collections.  It then approved an interlocal agreement with Brenham ISD via the Washington County Appraisal District for the assessment and collection of property taxes.

City Secretary Jeana Bellinger explained that Brenham ISD terminated its contract with Linebarger in November and started a new agreement with Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott, LLP.  The council’s action today allows it to join all other Washington County taxing entities in receiving delinquent property tax collection services from Perdue.

At the conclusion of the regular meeting, the council went into executive session to consult with the city attorney regarding the Brenham Municipal Airport.  No action was taken.

  1. Wouldn’t it be great if the Washington County Commissioners showed some recognition to the the Sheriff’s Office Deputies for how they handled the situation. Unfortunately, the hatred they have for that office punishes those who don’t deserve it
