JUNETEENTH FESTIVITIES BEGIN TONIGHT

The festivities celebrating a monumental event in history begins this evening in Brenham. Slavery officially ended in Texas on June 19th , 1865 when a Union general landed on the shores of Galveston Bay, and announced the Emancipation Proclamation.  Pamela Jenkins of the Washington County Historic Juneteenth Association says this is cause for a big celebration.

The Washington County Historic Juneteenth Association plans extensive celebrations beginning Friday and continuing through Saturday.  A dance with the Ra Ra Zydeco Band providing the music is set for tonight (Friday).

Retired Pickard High School Coach Lorenzo Cole is the Juneteenth Parade Marshal.

Jenkins says they always hold the celebrations during the Father’s Day Weekend, in advance of the actual holiday.  She says the highlight of the celebration will be the Juneteenth Parade Saturday morning.  Thirty-one floats, bands, local celebrities will join the Juneteenth Royalty  and the Grand Marshal of the Parade.  That Grand Marshal is retired Pickard High School Coach Lorenzo Cole, who Jenkins says is making the occasion a homecoming.

There will be further celebrations, with food, children’s activities and music at Fireman’s Park after the parade at Fireman’s Park until four pm, Saturday.

KWHI as always will have the Juneteenth Parade live at about 10:30
