BRYAN NATIVE IDENTIFIED AS INJURED HOUSTON POLICE OFFICER

A Bryan native has been identified as one of the two police officers shot in the line of duty Tuesday afternoon in Houston.

Ronny Cortez remains in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Cortez is a Bryan High School graduate. He is a 24-year veteran with the Houston Police Department and has worked in the gang unit and special response group.

Cortez is married with two children. His daughter currently attends college in Boston and is on her way back home to Texas after Houston Police and United Airlines helped arrange the flight.

Cortez and another officer- Jose Munoz- were shot by burglary suspects in a southwest Houston neighborhood.

Munoz was shot in the ankle and is being treated at Ben Taub Hospital. He could be released as soon as this (Wednesday) morning.

Cortez was shot multiple times and remains in critical condition. Officials say he will need surgery.

Police say the suspect who shot both men is dead, but another is still at large. Crime Stoppers is offering a $20,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the second suspect.
