BRENHAM POLICE OFFICER UNINJURED IN CAR ACCIDENT

A Brenham Police Officer was not injured in a one-vehicle accident that took place April 12th in Brenham.

According the Brenham Police, just after 8 p.m. an officer was responding to a request from the Blinn Police Department for assistance with dispersing a crowd, after a fight broke out near West 2nd Street at Green Street.

The officer approached the turnaround of US Hwy 290 East, on the South Frontage Road at South Chappell Hill Street.

According to the Police Department, the officer was “traveling at a speed of which he could not safely navigate the curve.”

The officer’s vehicle struck the curb and then struck one of the bridge pillars before coming to a stop. The officer was uninjured, but the front right quarter panel of his marked patrol car was damaged.

The Brenham Police Department isn’t releasing the name of the officer involved.

  1. Police department is hiring for all the keyboard justice warriors, hope u don’t ever need help and the officer has to drive extra slow getting to u to render aid in fear of criticism from the public, smh

  2. Does anybody REALLY know where your tax dollars go? Why not gripe about whose street get paved, and whose didn’t? What about streetlights? What about welfare recipients who do nothing to contribute? Library renovations? Lawn equipment for our parks? It must be hard carrying that chip on your shoulder regarding law enforcement. Bottom line, most people have no idea where their tax dollars go, but everybody wants to jump on this since it involved our police department. It was an accident (too fast to make the turn). Maybe they won’t be in such a hurry when YOU need them.

    1. I’ll choose this one to reply to; our law enforcement, city, county, state and national politicians and bureaucrats are not perfect. You, RGC, and Mom of 3 can’t imagine that criticism of LEO is ever warranted? Let me tell you, I hope they are not driving too fast when I need them; I’d be horrified to find that reckless driving en route to MY call caused someone else’s death. This has happened right here in Washington County, not all that long ago. When you are driving, it doesn’t matter what your reasons are — YOU are responsible for driving safely. Sure everybody makes mistakes, but if it happens repeatedly, I’d feel criticism is warranted. As well, if you spend most of your time working along and walking the streets of Brenham, during the day AND night, then you’d know several of our BPD officers are well known to the nightwalkers for reckless nighttime driving stunts such as soaring (airborne) over the RR tracks at Blue Bell on Chappell Hill St. with lights only, no siren, and sometimes no emergency lights, even. Repeated observations of such behavior leads some of us to be sceptical of the excuses you folks have put forth. Just because you folks have never witnessed this sort of stuff doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

  3. I dont know and dont care who it was, except that i am glad that he or she was not seriously injured. These folks put their lives on the line to protect us every time they leave their home. If they were driving slower and the incident they were responding to resulted in an injury or death, you would all whine and complain that the officer wasnt going fast enough. Give thanks for the incredible team of first responders Washington county has. I dont see you whiners out there helping your fellow man.

    1. I agree. We get to rest easy because we have 911. When we need the police, we expect them to get to us quick because it is an emergency. If someone breaks into your house and you are locked in a room hiding, you want the police there quick. Accidents happen all the time and this time it happened to be a police officer. I’m sure that he/she is embarrassed and upset that this happened. Compassion for our fellow man/woman goes a long way for you and them. I appreciate all the first responders and think this issue needs to be put to rest. What’s done is done.

  4. Doesn’t pass small test. If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck it’s a duck . The L.E famlies and all LE kniw the name and so of all the spouses and LE family members who are NOT employees know then why not the rest of non employees ie public . Why should those private citizens know. Looks like media cover up as well. I know the media pushes hard for names within seconds of a accident. When did that change? It didn’t! Why on just this accident!

    1. Please see my earlier comment. That was a long time ago when the local media reported every accident and access to names was readily available. Not the case now. If you look at photo captions beneath wreck photos in the newspaper, rarely will you see names. Only when there are serious injuries or a fatality will you read or hear names. 49 years ago we even did live news reports from accident scenes. But priorities change, and there are so many accidents now that they are not big news anymore.

  5. Treat this officer like all the others release his name you release Everyone else name what’s makes him better then any other person ? Why can’t his name be released?

    1. Since when does the media release the name of every person involved in a one car non injury accident? Get a life

  6. Whoever it is also is a citizen and name should be released! What’s the difference between me having a wreck and a police officer having a wreck?!? My name sure would be released! This town picks and chooses the stories they want to write. I have seen a few wrecks now and have never heard about them on the news?!? Also, this was on April 12 so why are you just writing about it now?

    1. First, we only wrote this story because it involved a Brenham police officer and his vehicle. Had it been just a citizen, with no injuries, there would not have been a story. Even in wrecks with injuries, many times no names are given. Second, the reason this story was a week after the accident was because we were not aware of it, and the Police Dept. did not make us aware of it. A member of the public, who saw the wrecked vehicle, alerted us to it this week. So if you see something, please call us at 979-836-3655 or email us at news@kwhi.com and we will investigate. And finally, I do believe the Chief should have released the name of the officer involved. It is embarrassing, but he or she is a public servant who was driving a city vehicle. Withholding the name causes the public to question the department’s integrity. But I do not believe the officer’s name is important enough to file a freedom of information request. Tom Whitehead, President/GM KWHI

      1. The Chief is not allowed to release the name to the media/public until the internal investigation is complete. It is part of the law enforcement bill or rights and most departmental policies.

      2. I love your hint in your last line. Let’s see if anyone will catch it. I didn’t, I had thought of it before I read your comment. 😉

The Million dollar question is would you allow the name be printed in the future? I believe about 10-15 years ago another police chief tried to hide it back then as well. Maybe that’s “crash” one of you commenters made mention of. lol

  7. Well maybe someone needs to educate the police dept that this car is taxpayer property and the officer’s salary is taxpayer money thus this whole incident falls under Open Records so if someone even the news media were to file an open records that would have to release the officer’s name or the accident report itself!!!

    1. They sure are quick to release names of people they pull over and just about any detail about them. What’s the difference?

    2. Maybe someone should let you know that I’m a tax payer too and what does it matter who it is? What’s the difference? Don’t people get into accidents in this town? I’ve seen plenty of them around town. The point is it’s called an accident for a reason. Who wants to intentionally hit something? He or she got into an accident. What’s the problem it happens from time to time? Unless you must be the perfect person in this world and never been in an accident or done anything wrong in your life this kind of stuff happens in society.

      1. This kind of stuff does happen, but it seems to happen to some people more often, leading some of us to wonder why. Twenty years ago the BPD force included a young officer nicknamed ‘Crash’ by his peers. He is still a BPD officer, and if you ask around, you might find out how he got his nickname, but you’ll never find the stories in the Banner Press archives, because they don’t exist.

        1. Peter,

If “Crash” is still on the police force after twenty years let me be the first to tell “Crash” thank you for yiour service. As the relative of a law enforcement officer I applaud the men and women who work tirelessly to keep our community safe and remember it was not the decision of the officer who actually had the accident not to release their name, I’m certain it was the decision of a higher ranking officer. But I can assure you it wasn’t “Crash”.

    3. Well JD maybe you should realize that officer pays taxes, so in a way that officer helps pay for that car and their salary. I’m sure the officer is not getting out of this without discipline, last thing he or she needs is the media harassing them for an honest mistake. Plus, what does it matter if they release the officers name, what’s done or done.

      1. Yeah and let me guess they will next saybthe car has too many miles and was about to be removed from service anyway….

      2. CLS, u r correct what’s done is done but as a governmental entity that is run on taxpayer dollars the police dept as well as any other governmental entity should be transparent to the taxpayers. Taxpayers should not have to feel like something is being hidden here and without being totally transperant that’s what it looks like.
