JUNETEENTH PARADE MARCHES THROUGH BRENHAM STREETS

  

In celebration of Juneteenth, Brenham hosted their annual Juneteenth parade this (Saturday) morning as floats, baton twirlers, and trail riders alike made up the hour-long procession honoring the holiday.

With representation from Pickard High School, Brenham’s Pickard High School “was an esteemed Texas school established about 1875 by the Brenham Public School system for black pupils of elementary through high school grades. It was the first high school in Texas for blacks,” according to the City’s website. While Brenham’s school’s integrated in the late 60’s, Pickard honors their history with the last graduating class in the Juneteenth parade. They celebrated their 50th anniversary this year.

There were floats from the New Beginnings Church, Faith Hope Mission, and Brenham Rest home.

Blinn College, HEB, and the Margaret E. Blizzard Senior Activity Center also decked out floats for the event.

Local kids lined the street for the candy, beads, and more that were tossed to the crowd, and some floats even handed out water to battle the heat of the day.

The celebrations continued at Fireman’s park from 12-4pm.
