Luther Hueske, the incumbent commissioner in Washington County's Precinct 2, has announced his bid for re-election in the 2018 Republican Primary.
Hueske said he has seen a lot of changes, but more are certain to come. He says his experience, as a commissioner for the last 7 years will be a great asset for the growth that is coming to our county in the years ahead.
"It is vital that we look ahead, recognizing growth is imminent and it is important to have experience on the commissioners’ court to work for the people, not only in Precinct 2, but all of the county," Hueske said. "It is a great honor to get up every morning and serve the people of Precinct 2.
Hueske states that the yearly budget process is a 2-4 month process and is challenging and very difficult to prioritize, but has a lasting impact on all taxpayers and citizens in the county.
"We have a very dedicated group of people that work for our county, including elected officials, department heads and their staffs, that roll up their sleeves and tackle difficult issues each and every day," he said. "On commissioners’ court, we may argue and not always agree in the beginning, but we work out differences and come together for what is best for all the citizens we serve."
“Road improvements, maintaining all the county buildings, a justice center that will improve courthouse security not only for county employees but the general public, are top priorities while maintaining a watchful eye on the budget,” Hueske stated. He has worked with the County Engineer in improving a number of roads with drainage issues that flood and hinder the movement of all vehicles including emergency vehicles in Pct. 2, but says there are more he wants to pursue.
Some of Hueske's responsibilities to the Commissioners’ Court include serving on the Washington County Healthy Living Association Board of Directors “Seniors Activities Center.” He has headed up the “Hog Out” program from the Texas Department of Agriculture locally since 2013 for the continued eradication of feral hogs in the county. Additionally, he serves on the Washington County Fairgrounds Management Board, the budget committee at Washington County Appraisal District, on the Board of the Brenham Heritage Museum, the Main Street Economic Restructuring Committee, and the Mill Creek Watershed Partnership. Hueske has also worked on various contracts and policies, stating his business experience of the past has been very useful.
Prior to becoming a county commissioner, Hueske owned a machining and welding business for nearly 25 years, which he sold in 2004. He has worked on the family farm since childhood, parts of which have been in the family for close to 160 years.
Hueske is a current member of the Salem Volunteer Fire Department and a past Fire Chief. He and his family are members of the Salem Lutheran Church where he served on the church council for two different terms and on various standing committees. He served on the Brenham Economic Development Foundation Board for 10 years and was Chairman of the Board for four.
He has been a longtime advocate for technical education for our youth and has presided as chairman of the local program from its conception, the A. W. Hodde Jr. Technical Education Center Advisory Board at Blinn College, where the majority of funds for building the original “Tech Center” were raised from private donations. He served on the building committee for the recently opened EDF/Blinn College addition, the “Technical Education Annex”, and serves on the recently formed Welding Advisory Committee.
Hueske has served as a member and chair of the Austin/Washington Counties Farm Service Agency, which administers the United Starts Department of Agriculture “Farm Policy” on the local level. In his youth he was involved in 4H and has given back by being a supporter of the Washington County Junior Livestock Auction for numerous years. To help preserve agriculture history, he is a member of the Antique Farm Equipment Committee at the Washington County Fair where they put on numerous demonstrations for young school children. He also a member of the Sharecroppers Tractor Club, which holds the Antique Tractor Show and Tractor Pull at the annual Burton Cotton Gin Festival. He has been a long-time member of the Washington County Chamber of Commence, the Chappell Hill Chamber of Commerce and the Brenham Rotary Club, and a faithful supporter of numerous volunteer fire departments in the county.
Hueske and his wife, Katie, are multi-generation residents of Washington County and parents of two grown sons, one daughter-in-law, one young grandson, and one future daughter-in-law next year.
"If the people of Precinct 2 will allow me to serve again by supporting me, it will be a great honor working for them and the rest of the county and I pledge to continue to be a ‘full time' Commissioner of Precinct 2," said Hueske. "Experience counts in making the right decisions for the people we serve."
