Country music star and native Texan George Strait has been named the 2018 Texan of the Year for his efforts to aid Hurricane Harvey victims.

The Texas Legislative Conference, who presents the award annually, is a nonpartisan organization made up of Texas politicians and business leaders who meet annually to focus on public policy issues.  The award has been given out since 1974.

To date, Strait’s charity initiatives have raised more than $50 million to support those affected by the storm.

Former Texas State Representative and Conference Chair Doug Miller said, “No one has done more than George Strait to raise awareness and funds for the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.”

Previous recipients include former presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush, Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Lady Bird Johnson and business leader T. Boone Pickens.

The only other musical artist to receive the award was Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel in 2011.

Strait will be honored at a reception in March in New Braunfels.
