BISD BOARD TO DISCUSS ‘YOUTH FACILITY’ MONDAY
In addition to approving Eliot Allen as the new Brenham Athletic Director and Football Coach, the Brenham School Board will get an update a controversial juvenile treatment facility.
The district could be called on to provide educational services for the Bluebonnet Haven facility, under construction near the State Supported Living Center on Highway 36 South.
The project has drawn concern and interest of local leaders and citizens in the wake of numerous escapes from a similar facility in New Ulm. In one of those cases, a young man set fire to a nearby home and watched it burn until firefighters arrived.
BISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson says he’s concerned that Bluebonnet Haven could affect the Brenham District’s accountability in meeting state standards.
Jackson says the Brenham District would be responsible for educating the facility’s youths.
Bluehaven’s principal owner Randall Bryant claims opposition to the facility is “politically-motivated”.
No date has been set for the opening of the facility.
The Brenham School Board meets Monday at noon at Brenham High School.
I am an Alton Elementary student parent. This is the second of our children that have attended Alton Elementary. The students have always attended at least one of the play productions at Blinn College. The college offers the play at no cost to the students. I was told this year the Alton Elementary students can’t participate since the cost of the bus trip from the school to Blinn College is out of budget; there is no funding for the bus. This is pathetic.
Once upon a time there was a district that could afford to pay their athletic director a MINIMUM of $350/day and on the other hand refused to spend the money to take our children to see a play at a facility less than 8 miles away! The moral of the story is… Performing Arts hold no where near the importance of athletics in this district. The end.
Have you called the school to ask how the community can help or is this only one side of the story? Often times people rant and the story isn’t even true.
