BRENHAM MAYOR MILTON TATE ANNOUNCES BID FOR RE-ELECTION
Brenham Mayor Milton Tate has announced that he will run for re-election this spring.
Tate filed an application for a place on the ballot in May’s election today (Wednesday), for the position of mayor. He was first elected in a special election in 2003 to succeed the late Walter Schwartz. Since then, he has been elected to four full terms.
Tate cited a number of accomplishments by the city during his tenure, with the most recent being the expansion and renovation of the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library, and the completion of a new, expanded animal adoption center.
Starting in 2019, Tate said much of the city’s attention will be on improving and renovating the city’s infrastructure, as work continues on damage done by the heavy rains of 2016 and Hurricane Harvey. He said more intense street repairs and utility upgrades will also be a priority.
Tate said he is running in order to support the new City Manager and staff in completing projects that have been started. He also wants to see the execution of the new comprehensive plans being developed by the city staff and public, after planned public forums.
Tate plans to have competition for the position this spring, as Dorothy Morgan has stated she intends to run for mayor. Morgan previously served as Brenham’s mayor for over four terms, beginning in the 1980’s. She also served five terms as Washington County Judge, starting in the early 1990’s.
Today (Wednesday) is the first day for candidates to begin filing for places on the ballot for the election on May 4th. The last day to file is Friday, February 15th. Early voting for the election begins Monday, April 22nd.
