THE SPECTATOR: KUDOS TO MAIFEST

Before this week gets away from me, I want to congratulate everyone involved with the 129th Brenham Maifest.  From Maifest President Catherine Kenjura and her board, to the parents of the junior and senior royalty, and to every volunteer who helped Brenham’s greatest celebration through all of the weather-related changes....I say “job well done”!  It took an incredible amount of effort to make decisions on the fly and scramble to present two coronations at Fireman’s Park on the same day.  After Friday night’s rain out, the weather could not have been more perfect for Saturday’s coronations and Sunday’s parade through downtown Brenham.  I know it was a very stressful time for the families and the Maifest Board, but it all worked out thanks to the hard work of dozens of volunteers.  Being from Brenham, I often take Maifest for granted.  It takes hearing comments from someone experiencing it for the first time to really appreciate what we have.  There’s nothing like Brenham Maifest.

On another note, congratulations to the winners of last Saturday’s elections…and also to those who did not win, for at least taking the time to run for elected office.  Local elections that are contested are few and far between these days.  Everyone likes to complain, but no one wants to get involved.  Speaking of getting involved, how hard is it to cast your vote?  What a terrible turnout of voters in the City of Brenham election, with less than 1400, just shy of 15 percent of registered voters participating.  With such a hotly contested mayor’s race, I expected much greater numbers.

Finally, I want to congratulate Danny Goss on his 14 year run on the Brenham City Council.  Danny and I may not have always seen eye to eye on various issues.  But one thing you always knew….Danny was passionate about his job representing the folks of Ward 4 and the City of Brenham.

And that’s the way it looks to this Spectator.
