30-year-old Chester “CJ” Jackson, Jr. was arrested by Burleson County Sheriff’s Deputies on April 19th in front of his home, on a charge of Public Intoxication.
Less than two days after being booked into jail, family members learned Jackson was in critical condition at an Austin-area hospital. They claim the Sheriff’s Office has not told them how or why he ended up there in critical condition.
According to the family’s attorney, U.A. Lewis, Jackson was in a coma and seemed to have small puncture wounds resembling taser marks on different parts of his body. A statement from the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office indicated Jackson was no longer in custody and had been taken by a deputy to a MHMR facility in Austin.
Lewis noted that, while Jackson’s condition has improved, the Sheriff’s Office’s handling of the case has been “troubling”. She said she has not seen any documentation of the arrest; no case number, no order for a plea, no mugshot.
On Monday, friends and family gathered in front of the Sheriff’s Office, along with members of Black Lives Matter, for a rally and news conference. According to Lewis, while Sheriff Thomas Norsworthy has promised video proof of Jackson entering and exiting the jail in good health, none of the evidence requested has been released.
KWHI has reached out to the Sheriff’s Office for comment, and was told that the request was forwarded to Sheriff Norsworthy. KWHI will keep you updated on any new information released.
