LAW SIGNED TO RAISE LEGAL SMOKING AGE TO 21 IN TEXAS
Beginning this fall, anyone wanting to purchase cigarettes, e-cigarettes or other tobacco products will need to be at least 21-years-old.
On Friday, Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 21 into law, which will go into effect September 1st. The bill increases the minimum age to purchase tobacco products to 21, from 18. Supporters say the law should help reduce the chance of addiction.
Those serving in the military will still be able to purchase tobacco products with a valid military ID.
According to the new law, a violation is a Class C misdemeanor, with a fine of up to $500.
By passing the law, Texas joins states such as Arkansas, California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, and Virginia who have raised or plan to raise the legal tobacco age.
