Deborah Vavra was selected for the position Tuesday.  A member of Blinn’s faculty since 1995, Vavra has overseen the Performing Arts Series and promoted the department through community outreach events.

From 2002-2018, Vavra has served in several positions during her time at Blinn, including Assistant Division Chair, Interim Division Chair, and Assistant Academic Dean.

Vavra was a Teaching Excellence Award winner and Blinn’s nominee for the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award in 2017.

She has also been recognized with the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award; the Robert Giles Distinguished Advisor Award; Phi Theta Kappa’s Faculty Scholar, Paragon, and Region Horizon Awards; and been named to the Texas Hall of Honor for Outstanding Advisors.

Vavra holds a Master of Arts in Communication from the University of Houston, and a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication from Texas A&M University.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Marcelo Bussiki said Vavra’s abilities with colleagues and students make her “an ideal choice” for the position.  He said under her leadership, the division has “a bright future filled with new opportunities”.
