CHRIS GRIFFIN WILL NOT BECOME CUBS’ NEW BASEBALL COACH

Cubs' new head baseball coach Chris Griffin.

In an abrupt about-face, the man who just this past week took the Brenham Cubs baseball coaching position, has changed his mind.

Coach Chis Griffin has confirmed that he has decided against accepting the job and will be remaining at Klein Collins.

In a statement to KWHI, Monday morning, Griffin said he feels bad about the decision.  “It is 100% my fault for this to turn out this way.”

“What it boils down to, my family and I could not pull the trigger on moving our family from a home we have lived in for our 15 years together.”

“It was a very painful decision and I know it affected a lot of people.  I am truly sorry for this decision, especially Coach (Elliot) Allen and all the people who put their faith in me.  But I think it is best for my family.”

Coach Griffin had been introduced Wednesday evening at a reception at Brenham High School, as the successor to Coach Lanny Williams, who is now the head coach at Cedar Park.

The search will now resume for the next head coach of Brenham Cubs baseball.

  1. not a surprise. I was born and raised in Brenham, left and returned 17 years later. I was the outsider. Its hard to move to Brenham, Tx. Its a good thing he baled now, good luck finding someone to fit your mold.

    1. Very well said Brenda! I’m proud your opinion fits the criteria of this forum and was allowed to be viewed by all especially the new great citizen just wanting to be treated honest and fair! It’s so disappointing how these old and new folks act like there made of gold! Lol

Then they wonder why the ski turns black only on them and it’s pretty blue up ahead! Treat everyone like you would like to be treated then it makes everything better!!!

  2. A baseball coach can’t coach with handcuffs on. Throughout the last ten years I’ve seen super talented kids on the bench because there fellow team mate had money, parents were powerful, parents were alumni, etc. If the best players can’t be put on the field why would you want to coach.

  3. My guess is that he came here and saw the behavior of the parents of perspective players trying to already get an “in” before the school year even started. The guy is getting gift baskets from parents. Really?

Shaking his hand and telling him “Welcome to Brenham” would have been appropriate behavior. Not what was going on that night.

Psssst – if we want a quality coach to come here let’s not spook the next one with highly political behavior and rear end kissing at the next “introduction reception”.

    1. FYI-The gift basket was from the Brenham Cub Booster Club welcoming him to Brenham. It not only included Brenham Cub Booster apparel for his family but also donations from various businesses. The same thing was done for Coach Allen at his welcome reception. There was no “rear end kissing” in that basket; just a group of people who love the Cubs, no matter what the sport, trying to show some hospitality. And when the next coach is introduced, you can bet there will be another basket!

      1. Unfortunately Really? Has a valid point.

I did not see that for a few other coaches receive this gift basket when I’d attend the events to meet the coaches such as softball.

It can very easily misconstrued honestly, especially when not consistent.

        1. BISD only cares for the coaches of a couple of sports. The rest don’t matter.

  4. Something’s not right at BISD. 40% turnover at BHS indicates something is wrong. Admin has focused efforts on recruiting new teachers and coaches but none on retaining the veterans.

    1. What FACTS do you have to support your claim of “40% turnover at BISD”? Or is your claim based on beauty shop / coffee shop gossip?

      1. 42 teachers at BHS (I didn’t say it was the rate for BISD). At least 4 who were former teachers of the year. As a school board member, do you think record turnover of successful, veteran teachers is not a problem?

        1. BHS is worse than large inner city schools. The rugs have so many lumps under them they can’t be walked on from Admin sweeping the problems under them. Brenham has been destroyed by the constant building of new government housing. We bring in everyone from everywhere with the majority of the occupants having no desire for education or work ethic. Students only desire to attend school for the social life. If coach did the research and has kids he made a wise decision on staying way from Brenham. I know what the atmosphere is like I was employed there.

        2. Where does this 42 number come from? How many teachers @BHS, total? How is ‘teacher’ defined? That’s a fairly extraordinary claim.

      2. I would love for the school district to actually post their there teacher turnover rate for everyone to see, I bet you it would be much higher than many think. The way they treat teachers while over paying the administration is just one area that is causing a higher than average turnover.

    2. Some of the veterans needed to go and turnover was needed. Change is never easy, but in this case it was much needed and where Brenham needs to go.

  5. Something tells me there is more to the story, but I did feel it awfully odd he was hired so fast after Williams announced his departure. I think they were hasty myself. (That is an observation only: fact or not I don’t nor will know).

I wish him the best honestly: people ARE allowed to change their minds for any reason on a job, including rescinding their acceptance.

That applies for any reason: spoken or not. It’s not the first time I’ve seen this either. I personally had difficulty moving from a town recently living there for many years so I get it.

I think folks SHOULD be thankful he chose to change his mind now – during the summer – when teachers and coaches do more job searching and a happier candidate comes to Brenham.

Would you rather him stay, not he happy and it show next season with another less than .500 season?

  6. I bet he realized what our local “politics” were gonna be like after the meet and greet the other night

    1. You mean like every town? If that is what scared him off, then he wasn’t the right man for the job. Still in better shape then we were and will be.

      1. Brenham is a special place like no other. A place that still has an oppressive underlying history. It appears on the surface to be inclusive but, it actually is not. The message is portrayed that, “either you are from Brenham or your not!” And if you are not, then you are not included. So, cub fan, I agree that every community has politics that come into play but, I have never seen anything like what occurs in Brenham. This is evident in many of the comments posted about coach Williams. What did some writer ps say in the previous series of posts, “he just didn’t fit in here, or let’s get it right this time!” Think about those words and how that looks. Maybe, the new coach or might I say the former candidate, figured that out early and decided that he did not what any part of it.

  7. Roll out the red carpet for the guy and he bails. Would take bets that Klein Collins offered more money for him to stay.

    1. Yes we are. Looking at what Coach Williams has tweeted he’s still concerned about what happens in Brenham! Move on coach!

  8. Shame on that dude.. I find it hard to believe that he and his family did not discuss this thoroughly prior to him accepting the job. I am sure his pay raise at Klein Collins was significant. Hope he is happy there for a long time, as he won’t get another offer any time soon. I also hope the Cubs schedule him this year and show him what he missed out on.

    1. Don’t fault the guy. Something apparently “spooked” him and/or his family. You don’t make a decision of this caliber and suddenly back away. There’s more to this!

  9. That is just not right I was taught if you say you going to do something you do it.
