EAGLE LAKE WOMAN ARRESTED IN COLORADO CO. MURDER INVESTIGATION

Colorado County authorities have arrested a woman in the midst of a homicide investigation.

Kayla Hurd
(Colorado Co. Jail)

21-year-old Kayla Kashawn Hurd of Eagle Lake was arrested Thursday afternoon on a warrant for first degree Murder.

According to a release from the Colorado County Sheriff’s Office, the charge comes from an incident on June 16th, where Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an early afternoon crash at Highway 90 and FM 102 in Alleyton, about four miles east of Columbus.  The driver of the vehicle advised she had been robbed.

Information received at that crash site led to authorities discovering another crash nearby on Taylor Street.  The vehicle on Taylor Street was on fire, and had driven off the roadway into a wooded area.

While extinguishing the fire, Columbus volunteer firefighters found the body of a male, later identified as 27-year-old Joshua Wayne Thomas of Columbus.

A report from the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was homicide.  During investigation, sufficient evidence was recovered to support criminal charges in connection to Thomas’ death.

Hurd was taken to the Colorado County Jail, with bond set at $250,000.  No other information was released, due to the ongoing investigation.
