LOCAL PHYSICIAN STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF STAYING SAFE IN WATER
As the summer drags on, it’s important to remember the importance of water and swim safety.
Dozens of drownings have been reported over the course of this year, with several over the summer in the Brazos Valley and the greater-Houston area.
Dr. Eric Alford, a family physician at Baylor Scott and White – Brenham Clinic, says drowning is among the leading cause of death for children of any age.
Doctors say drowning can happen extremely quickly, leaving little time for anyone nearby to help. Dr. Alford says that’s why one of the best things to do to prevent drowning is to stay educated.
Parents are encouraged to consider enrolling their children in swimming and water safety lessons. Safety experts also suggest trying to avoid distractions and always have an eye on people in the water.
