BLINN TRUSTEES HOLD BRIEF MEETING WITH NO PUBLIC COMMENT ON TAX RATE
A meeting today (Tuesday) to offer comment on Blinn College’s proposed tax rate lasted less than ten minutes.
The first public hearing on Blinn’s proposed rate of 5.6 cents per $100 valuation drew no comment from the public.
The new rate is above the effective rate of 5.28 cents per $100, but below last year’s rate of 6.01 cents per $100.
The rate is expected to generate $2.1 million in tax revenue to support maintenance and operations at the Brenham campus. It is expected to average about $8.75 in monthly taxes on the average Washington County home, valued at $199,906.
While Blinn serves a 13-county area, only Washington County sits within the College’s taxing district. Property tax revenue covers roughly a third of the Brenham campus’s maintenance and operations costs, while Brenham campus student tuition and fees cover the other two-thirds. By law, property tax revenue cannot be used to fund campuses outside of the taxing district.
The next public hearing on the proposed tax rate is set for September 12th at 5:30 p.m., in the Brenham Campus Administration Building. The board of trustees will vote on the rate at its next regular monthly meeting on September 17th, also at 5:30 p.m.
