AUTHORITIES INVESTIGATING SHOOTING DEATH OF FAIR STEER IN SEALY
An Austin County family is seeking answers after the shooting death of its show steer, just days before the Austin County Fair.

The morning of September 29th, Sealy High School senior Cory Barrett went to tend to his steer Hawkeye when he found it dead in a trap pen behind his family’s barn on Gebhardt Road. Cory had worked with the steer since March to get it ready for the fair.
Barrett’s family believes the violent act was not a random one, but rather, one of intention. They claim that, due to the angle and positioning of the shot and where the bullet was found inside the steer, this was a targeted attack.
The family says this was not the first act of violence against Hawkeye, either; after going to a chiropractor in May, right after fair tag-in for steers, they say the chiropractor found scar tissue from a beating on the calf’s back.
The Austin County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed it is looking into the matter, but did not provide any other details on the investigation.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family make up expenses and replace funding that could have come from Friday’s livestock sale.
