Veterans across Washington County were recognized this (Monday) morning at the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the American Legion Hall in Brenham.

The program is held each Veterans Day in honor of all those who have served in the military.

Featured speaker at this year’s event was Joe Ramirez, Jr., retired Brigadier General and Commandant of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Ramirez gave the history of Veterans Day, and spoke on his family’s history in the military.

During his speech, Ramirez gave a quote from former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, saying the credit does not belong to the critic, but rather to the one who fights in the arena.

Ramirez expressed his gratitude to veterans of the past, and hope for those who serve in the future.

Also addressing Monday’s crowd were dignitaries from Brenham, Burton and Washington County, State Representative Ben Leman, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, and a representative from the office of U.S. Congressman Michael McCaul.

Current and former members of the armed forces were honored throughout the program, which concluded with the Friendship Quilt Guild presenting a dozen quilts to veterans. Bells were also rung for all those that have passed from the various veterans organizations in Washington County.
