48-year-old Julia Ann Poff of Brookshire was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty July 1st to Transportation of Explosives with Intent to Kill, Injure or Intimidate.
Officials with the U.S. Attorney’s Office said on or around October 2, 2016, Poff mailed a package containing a homemade explosive addressed to former President Barack Obama. Poff’s plea also acknowledged she mailed two similar packages to Governor Greg Abbott and the Social Security Administration’s former acting administrator.
Authorities said each of the packages contained a “victim-activated, booby trapped, improvised explosive device (IED) containing explosive materials”. Evidence recovered from the packages was traced to the Poff family home. Officials said she admitted she was solely responsible for sending the packages.
Poff’s prison sentence will be followed by three years of supervised release. She will also be required to pay $9,700 in restitution.
