FORMER LaGRANGE MAYORAL CANDIDATE ARRESTED

  

A former candidate for mayor of LaGrange has been indicted on fraud charges.

Sarah Barksdale, who was defeated by incumbent Janet Moerbe in May’s mayoral election, is accused of fraudulently receiving disaster aid from Hurricane Harvey.

LaGrange Police Chief David Galbreath says his office began investigating Barksdale after a complaint in November.

Galbreath tell the Fayette County Record, Barksdale is accused of filing numerous fraudulent applications through several local non-profit organizations, while posing as a victim of Hurricane Harvey.

While Galbreath would not disclose the amount of aid she allegedly received, he did say Barksdale appliances, linens, household goods and money.   He goes on to say that Barksdale lived on the north side of town at the time of Hurricane Harvey—away from the flooding that displaced hundreds of residents in southwest LaGrange in 2017.

Sharrell Wright of Schulenburg has also been indicted on similar charges.
