BRENHAM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT TO HELP LEAD NATIONAL YOUTH 4-H PHOTOGRAPHY SUMMIT

A Brenham Junior High school student and Brenham 4-H Club member is preparing to head to Washington, D.C. for a national photography event.

Audrey Schmidt

Audrey Schmidt will be one of just six students across the state helping to lead the National 4-H Photography Youth Summit, being held from February 26th to March 1st.  At 13 years old, Schmidt will be the youngest ever to help lead the summit.

Around 80 participants are expected to attend. Schmidt, along with her photography coach, Elizabeth Schlak, will teach attendees all about photography through field trips, night and drone ranch photography, and day photo tours.

As a member of the Junior Master Photographer (JMP) Program in the Washington County 4-H Photograph Project, Schmidt travels across the state to 4-H events, photographing them for the 4-H program. She also helps lead sessions in the monthly Washington County Photography Project meeting.

Some of Schmidt’s recent photos gained attention in several publications. A photo of hers was published in the September 2019 issue of Ranch and Rural Living Magazine, for receiving Honorable Mention in the Youth category in their photo contest.  Another photo was published in the magazine’s October 2019 issue, receiving first place in the Landscape and Architecture category.

A third photo of Schmidt’s was published in the American Quarter Horse Association’s (AQHA) Quarter Horse Journal in November 2019. The same photo, with a full-page article, was published in the AQHA’s America’s Horse Magazine in December 2019.

Schmidt says the skills she has learned—and continues to learn—will certainly help her as she moves forward in life.

Schmidt thanks her sponsors for helping fund her trip to Washington, D.C.: Brenham Tire and Auto, Bank of Brenham, the Naumann family, the Binger family, and her own family.

The Brenham 4-H Club will be hosting a Give Back fundraiser on January 28th at Chili’s to help raise funds for sponsorships for this event, as well as new Brenham 4-H Club member shirts.
