BALD EAGLE EUTHANIZED AFTER BEING FOUND INJURED ON GRIMES CO. HIGHWAY
A bald eagle had to be euthanized Friday, after it was found injured on a highway in Grimes County.
The eagle was located early Thursday by Grimes County Sheriff’s Deputy Preston Goode, who said he saw vehicles swerving to avoid hitting something near the intersection of Highway 30 and Highway 90 in Roans Prairie.
After determining the eagle was alive, Goode called various wildlife rescue agencies, and was eventually joined by a state trooper. The two, following the advice of a Texas Parks and Wildlife official, wrapped the eagle in a jacket and moved it to the grass, where it turned over and sat upright.
The two were joined by a member of the Grimes County constable’s office, who Goode said had recently rescued a protected species of owl in the area. The group reached out to a wildlife center in Magnolia licensed to rehabilitate bald eagles, which agreed to take the eagle in.
The eagle, which was found to be a female, was initially expected to live. However, according to Goode, a veterinarian ultimately determined the eagle suffered multiple compound fractures in its wings, as well as a broken talon, and forced its rescuers to euthanize it.
Goode said it was not determined how the eagle was injured.
