Mason Swain was Life-Flighted Friday to the Texas Medical Center, after suffering severe injuries in a dog attack at his grandmother’s home in Washington County. According to a report from KHOU-11, Mason’s father found him critically injured in the backyard, after the dogs broke out of a locked room in the house.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for Mason, he was attacked by two pit bulls. The page said Mason has serious facial trauma, has lost one ear, and could potentially lose an eye.  Mason’s family said he is facing multiple surgeries and skin grafts.

According to Washington County Sheriff Otto Hanak, the attack appeared to be unprovoked. Hanak said one animal was directly involved in the injury to the child, but all dogs on the property were seized for investigation purposes.  Brenham Animal Control is assisting in the investigation.

The KHOU-11 report indicated the dogs were “put down immediately” after the incident.

Hanak said investigation is ongoing, and his office has been in contact with the Washington County Attorney’s Office since the attack took place. He said the owner of the animals will be looked at in a serious manner, and wants to make sure nothing like this ever happens again.

A GoFundMe account set up to support Mason’s recovery is available here.

  1. ALL dogs have the potential to do this! No matter how “sweet and loving” their owners claim them to be. It’s why I prefer cats. ? ?

You never hear of cats mailing a small child to death – or their owners.

I’m glad all the dogs will killed. I agree that pit bulls can be very sweet dogs. I agree it’s “in their DNA” but it in ALL DOGS DNA! Did everyone just forget that all dogs descended from Wolves?!?!?

  2. I was mauled by an Old English Sheep Dog in 2012 and nearly lost my nose and my life. Thank God for my wonderful surgeon. Be grateful and reach out to help this young child. It’s not about the type of dog. It’s about the fact it happened and his family need our support during this difficult time. It’s a long journey that will leave both emotional and physical lifelong scars. Until you’ve experienced this type of trauma, you can’t possibly understand . It’s not about dog type . It’s about the young boy, his life and the horrific experience. Reach out to this family.

  3. Dogs were in a locked room for a reason. Yes, the breed is known for having vicious potential, but it’s humans that are to blame. Whether thru neglect, abuse, or purposeful training and breeding for profit, humans must get all the credit. Give a me a well trained and loved dog any day over most humans.

  4. It’s not always pit bulls. Its just these are the attacks that get the most publicity. Any dog has the ability to attack or bite The first clue to look at in this article is the dogs BROKE out of a locked room. If the dogs were safe WHY are they in a locked room. My prayers go out to that poor boy. I’m glad the dogs were put down, but let’s not blame the breed let’s blame the owners.

  5. It’s always pit bulls. Their owners always defend them as being sweet and innocent. They are all sweet and innocent until they aren’t. I’m sure those pit bull owners reading this will say “My pit bulls aren’t like that”. The owners of the ones that did this would have said the same thing. It’s in their DNA. Not every one will snap but they are capable because it is in their DNA.

    1. Are you an expert in Pit Bull DNA?? I have had plenty of experience with pitbulls, and family members of mine have also had other breeds of dogs that are WAY more aggressive than any of the pitbulls that me or my children have been around. It is not “always” pitbulls. Do some research, but most of all pray that baby boy gets better.

    2. The dogs were in a locked room. Therefore the owner knew what they were capable of doing. However, if you ACTUALLY know facts instead of just hating you would know that pit bulls ARE NOT ” always” the dogs that hurt people. But again ” haters gonna hate”

    3. I have a Chihuahua who could be deemed vicious. She’s just a little dog but hates everything and everybody including me sometimes. All dogs have it in the DNA to be that way not just pit bulls. If you believe science all dogs are descendants of wolves.

All modern dogs are descendants of wolves, though this domestication may have happened twice, producing groups of dogs descended from two unique common ancestors.
