TxDOT: KNOW WHERE TO PUT POLITICAL SIGNS

As election season heats up, TxDOT is reminding citizens of the proper procedures of placing and displaying political signs.

The City of Brenham elections in May 2019 saw political signs pop up all over residential properties. TxDOT is reminding citizens to keep those signs off of public land.

TxDOT officials say it is illegal to place any signs on or within public right of way.  This includes posting signs on trees, telephone poles, traffic signs, and other objects on the right of way.

Campaign signs along state roads can be placed on private property, with the owner’s permission.  Signs must be made of lightweight material and be no larger than 50 square feet.

Signs may be posted no earlier than 90 days before an election, and must be removed within ten days after the election.

Before placing a sign inside of incorporated city limits, residents should check with the city for applicable ordinances.

If a sign has been placed in the right of way, or it has been deemed a traffic hazard, TxDOT will remove it without prior notice.  All costs associated with sign removal will be paid by the sign owner.

Anyone with questions is encouraged to call their local TxDOT office.
