TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS PLANNED FOR FEBRUARY 29TH, MARCH 1ST
Plans are underway at the Washington on the Brazos State Historical Site for the 184th Anniversary of Texas independence.
This year’s “Texas Independence Day Celebration” will be held Saturday and Sunday, February 29th and March 1st. The 300-acre site is where 59 delegates met in 1836 to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico.
The admission-free celebration will feature two stages of live music and entertainment, including the Texas A&M Singing Cadets, the Brenham Children’s Chorus, and several folk music performances. A third tented stage at Barrington Plantation will showcase performances typically seen in the early 1800s, including Dr. Balthasar’s Medicine Show, Professor Gerard the Texian Magician, and a traditional Punch and Judy puppet show.
Visitors will be able to freely wander a bonafide 1836 Texas Army camp and learn how soldiers and their families lived, and witness musket and cannon firings.
New this year at Independence Hall, living historians will present highlights of the Convention of 1836 both days of the event, showcasing important debates, decisions, and correspondence. Attendees will then be able to meet the “delegates” of the Convention and learn more about the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
The celebration is presented by H-E-B and coordinated by the Washington on the Brazos Historical Foundation, in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission and The Texas Army reenactors. Sponsors for the event include: Washington County, City of Navasota, the Arts Council, Brannon Industrial Group, Spirit of Texas Bank, Briannas Salad Dressing, TB&T Bank and Trust, Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative, Brenham National Bank, Insite Brazos Magazine, and Larry and Mary Wingham.
