BELLVILLE CITY COUNCIL APPROVES GRANT TO FUND A.C. PROJECT AT TURNVEREIN
Air conditioning will soon be coming to Bellville’s Turnverein Pavilion.
The Bellville City Council last week voted unanimously to approve a $144,000 grant from the Bellville Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) to provide air conditioning at the historic venue.
The item had been removed from the agenda two weeks prior, as several councilmembers had questions and concerns. However, the council was able to meet with members of the Turnverein committee prior to their meeting last week, and also toured the building.
The BEDC voted 4-2 early in January in favor of the grant. The Turnverein restoration project first came to the BEDC in July of 2017. Items related to the project have been on the BEDC’s agenda 12 times in its past 31 meetings.
The historic venue has been designated as a Texas Recorded Historic Landmark, dating back to the late 1800’s. Several events to help fund the repair and restoration of the pavilion have been held over the past few years.
Phase one of the project, which restored the facility, is wrapping up. With the council’s vote, the second phase—air conditioning—will begin soon, and should take about three weeks to complete.
