WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONER, TAX ASSESSOR-COLLECTOR CANDIDATES SPEAK AT FORUM

Support for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the handling of county roads, and questions regarding the new Road and Bridge facility were just a few of the topics that candidates covered at Wednesday night’s Candidate’s Forum at Brenham National Bank, hosted by KWHI.
A crowd of about 50 people heard from Republican candidates for Washington County Commissioner for Precinct One, and for Tax Assessor-Collector.
Many of the questions presented to commissioners centered around the Road and Bridge facility, with some asking if replacing the old building was necessary. Don Koester, incumbent for Washington County Commissioner of Precinct One, said the new facility is very important to the county’s future.
Koester, who first took office January 1, 2017, said he hopes to continue serving as commissioner as long as he is able.
Commissioners were also asked how they planned to address the struggle of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to retain deputies. Challenging Koester is Rick Seeker, who said the Sheriff’s Office is doing a great job with what it has, but the county needs to devote more resources to it.
Seeker said he is not looking for a career in politics, and only plans to run for a single term.
Running for Washington County Tax Assessor-Collector are Cheryl Gaskamp and Daphne Kohring. Incumbent Dot Borchardt is retiring from the post.
Kohring, who has worked as controller of Appel Ford and Hyundai of Brenham, says her 13 years of automotive industry experience has prepared her well for the duties of the office of tax assessor-collector.
Gaskamp cited her 42 years of experience in the banking industry and love for Washington County as the prime reasons for why she should be elected.
The primary election is March 3rd, with early voting beginning Tuesday, February 18th.
