BLUEBONNETS, WILDFLOWERS BEGINNING TO POP UP ACROSS WASHINGTON CO.

It’s nearly time for what many Washington County residents say is the most beautiful time of year: bluebonnet season.

Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrushes, and other wildflowers have been springing up around the county in various spots, and should continue to do so over the next few weeks.

Lu Hollander, Tourism and Marketing Specialist for Visit Brenham, said, should Mother Nature cooperate with a few more days of sunshine, flowers should start popping up all over the place.

Hollander said she starts getting questions on where wildflowers are growing as soon as January.  She said Indian Paintbrushes should be particularly strong this year.

A blooming field of bluebonnets is always a popular choice for family photos.

Hollander said the continued cool weather and lack of a hard freeze over the winter led to grasses growing up taller than the wildflowers, obscuring some of them.

Some of the places Hollander has seen quite a few wildflowers include the “Welcome to Washington County” sign on Highway 290 coming from Houston, an undeveloped field behind Wal-Mart, Washington-on-the-Brazos, Old Baylor Park in Independence, and the roadsides of Highway 290 towards Burton and Highway 36 towards Somerville.  She added that there are flowers on a hill by Los Cabos Mexican Restaurant on Highway 36 South, but noted the hill is rather steep.

Hollander reminds anyone stopping to take photos on the highway to stay safe and be careful.

Hollander said Visit Brenham has added an interactive map on its website that will show places for people to take photos.  The map can be pulled up on a smartphone or a computer at www.visitbrenhamtexas.com.  She said paper maps are always available at the Visitors Bureau in downtown Brenham.
