GOV. ABBOTT WAIVING STAAR TESTING REQUIREMENTS DUE TO COVID-19

Governor Greg Abbott has announced he will waive testing requirements for this year’s STAAR test.

Abbott’s announcement today (Monday) comes after numerous school districts closed campuses this week due to growing fears about COVID-19.  Some of those schools expect to be closed through the April testing window.

Abbott also said he will be asking the federal government to waive its standardized testing requirements this year, which apply to all states.

According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), as of Sunday afternoon, approximately 569 school districts had announced closures because of COVID-19 concerns.

The office of the governor said it will work with the TEA to make sure schools communicate with students while schools are closed.  Abbott said the state will work to give school districts flexibility to protect and ensure the health of students, faculty, and their families.
