BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS SECOND VIRTUAL MEETING

The Brenham School Board held their second virtual audio-only meeting at noon today (Monday). Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson said that he has witnessed many individual acts of kindness as everyone works to make it through these difficult times. He said that each teacher has reached out to their students either by phone or through technology in the past 3 weeks that the schools have been closed.

The school board members approved a resolution regarding the determination of class ranking for graduation purposes. For this school year, they voted that the class ranking will end with the fourth 6 weeks grading instead of the fifth 6 weeks grading. A letter will be going out to the graduating seniors explaining the change.

Sandra Baxter , Director of Child Nutrition Services for the District, presented an update on the ongoing breakfast and lunch distribution. She stated that over 18,000 meals have been handed out at the three locations. She also noted that the district has applied for grant money to provide home delivery of meals and is waiting to hear back on that. –more-

Paul Aschenbeck, Assistant Superintendent of Operations, updated the board on the upkeep of the district facilities and grounds. He stated that custodians and grounds keepers have been doing their normal routines while the students are out. He said that once the all clear is given, that a special disinfecting mister will be deployed to each of the classroom to insure that they are clean.

Sarah Cook, Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Accountability, gave an update on remote learning services. She said that most students had covered all of the required content before the spring break recess, so the remote learning for them is simply a review of topics already covered in class. For those students that still had 2 or 3 weeks of content yet to cover, they are looking into ways to teach it, including video classes. Any concept that they come up with will need to be fair to students without internet or whose parents need to keep working.
