On May 21st, the city and Strand Associates opened bids regarding sanitary sewer and gas extension work along Burleson Street.  The extensions are in areas that were annexed in 2008 and on the sanitary sewer side.  The gas extension will create a looped feed from Burleson Street to Highway 36 North.

Six bids for the project were received, with J&D Construction of Bronson submitting the lowest bid of $170,464.  The total bid consists of a base bid for $122,815 for the sanitary sewer extension, and an alternate bid for $47,648 for the gas line extension.  The sanitary sewer work will be funded by bond proceeds and wastewater reserves, while the gas extension will be funded by gas reserves.

Unrelated to the utility extension project, Public Works Director Dane Rau gave an update this (Tuesday) afternoon about the current status of the Burleson Street road repair project at the Little Sandy Creek crossing.  The work is addressing the issues caused by flooding in 2016 and Hurricane Harvey in 2017, and includes improvements such as a new bridge structure and roadway.

According to Rau, the contractor, Angel Brothers Enterprises, is about 75 percent complete with the project, which was contracted to them in October of 2019Work began on the project in January.

Rau said the contractor has been pouring the bridge decking and side slopes over the last few days, and is working on additional concrete pours this week which involve the slope end treatments around the creek channels.  He said the contractor will soon start on tying the roadway into the bridge, which is asphalt roadway.  Once the roadway and guardrails are completed, the city will meet with the contractor to do a walkthrough.

Rau said there have been several weather delays on the project, due to the contractor working in a major channel.  He said COVID-19 also caused about a week’s worth of delays.  He said the contractor is slightly behind schedule, but work should be complete in 45 to 60 days, in mid to late July.

The council will meet Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m., at Brenham City Hall.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the council will:

  • Present a life-saving award to Brenham Police Officer Eddie Martinez.
  • Hold a public hearing on and possibly approve a zoning change for the Brenham Market Square development on South Market Street from mixed residential use to commercial, research, and technology use.
  • Hold a public hearing on and potentially approve a specific use permit request from the Washington County Healthy Living Association to allow additional parking as an accessory use for the Margaret E. Blizzard Senior Activity Center.
  • Consider the temporary closure of state right-of-way and a noise variance in connection to the Hot Nights, Cool Tunes summer concert series.
  • Consider a resolution amending the city’s human resources policy manual.
  • Receive an update on the city’s COVID-19 response and recovery efforts.
