JUNETEENTH CELEBRATIONS, PEACEFUL PROTESTS SATURDAY IN DOWNTOWN BRENHAM, BELLVILLE
A Facebook group made up of several local residents will gather in downtown Brenham and Bellville tomorrow (Saturday) to celebrate Juneteenth.
The group, called “Friends Against Racism”, which has organized peaceful protests throughout the region this month, will meet at the Austin County Courthouse at 10 a.m. and the Washington County Courthouse from 6 to 8 p.m.
Event organizers say the family-friendly gatherings are meant to not only celebrate Juneteenth, but to peacefully bring attention to ending systemic racism.
Anyone planning to attend is asked to follow social distancing guidelines and encouraged to wear masks. Hand sanitizer will be made available.
Formal Juneteenth activities were not hosted in Brenham this year by the Washington County Historical Juneteenth Association, who in May cancelled their annual celebration. The activities normally span Father’s Day weekend with a parade through downtown Brenham, along with live music and activities at Fireman’s Park.
I am all for speaking up against racism still going on around the world, but when are we going to speak up and protest about the injustice that is happening right here, right now. We all come here looking for who got arrested or indicted so we can have something to talk about. And most people feel if you were indicted that you must have done something. Truth is, the Grand Jury indicts pretty much every case that comes to them, even if the so called evidence they are presented with is evidence at all. A person may be completely innocent and there are documents that prove that and the case will go before a judge or worse even a jury and an innocent person’s life could be hanging by a thread. Now it’s up to a defense attorney to defend someone who has already been deemed guilty due to articles printed online and in newspapers and hearsay. Defendants are so afraid of getting a maximum sentence of found guilty, they will take a plea just to come back home in time to still have some kind of life left. When are we going to stand up for our people and say enough is enough! Nowadays you’re Guilty until proven Innocent.
