BRENHAM FIRE OFFICIALS URGE CAUTION WHEN USING FIREWORKS FOR FOURTH OF JULY

  

The Fourth of July may look quite a bit different this year due to COVID-19, but the display of fireworks will go on, and the need for safety and caution when using them remains as important as ever.

Interim Brenham Fire Marshal Roger Williams reminds citizens that according to city ordinance, fireworks are illegal within Brenham city limits without a special permit.

The transport, storage, sale, or possession of fireworks within the city is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $200.  In addition to facing a fine, individuals who violate the ordinance are subject to having their fireworks confiscated by the Brenham Fire or Police Departments.

In areas of Washington County where fireworks are allowed, citizens are reminded to stay well away from buildings, brushy areas, and tall grass when discharging fireworks.  They are also discouraged from allowing small children to use fireworks, with Williams saying something as innocent-looking as a sparkler can cause severe burns.

Residents are also advised to wear eye protection and to have a fire extinguisher, hose, or even a bucket of water nearby while using fireworks.

In case of an accident, citizens should call the fire department or other emergency responders as quickly as possible.
