BISD INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT GOES OVER DISTRICT’S PLANS FOR REOPENING IN THURSDAY BRIEFING

Brenham ISD continues to make adjustments to prepare for the start of classes, which are now less than a month away.

Interim Superintendent Huey Kinchen gives an online briefing Thursday as he sits behind a plexiglass barrier, which will be one of the new COVID-19 safety measures utilized by the district in the new school year.

Brenham ISD Interim Superintendent Huey Kinchen gave a Facebook Live address Thursday night, where he gave more information on the district’s reopening plan and what safety measures will be utilized at campuses and facilities.

Kinchen said, as a result of the surveys asking parents and staff for their input on the start of the new school year, the district has received “literally hundreds of questions” about instruction methods and the safe return to classes for students and staff.

Kinchen said the district’s instructional team, led by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Brandi Hendrix, is working to provide students the best education possible.

Kinchen also went over the district’s opening protocols for facilities, stating that Assistant Superintendent of Operations Paul Aschenbeck and his team are working to make the appropriate adjustments necessary to keep schools safe.  While doing so, he showcased a pair of plexiglass barriers prototypes, one of which will be available to teachers to place between them and students.  The other can be placed on classroom and cafeteria tables.

Kinchen said after the conclusion of the survey, the district will formulate a Frequently Asked Questions page on its website, www.brenhamisd.net, to answer commonly raised questions from the public.

Next week, parents will receive commitment forms asking them whether they want their children to attend school remotely or in person.  Kinchen said their answer will commit their child to that selection for one grading period, while no answer to the form will automatically place the child in the face-to-face instructional model.

Kinchen said he met Thursday morning with members of the Teacher Advisory Group, made up of teacher representatives from each campus, to receive their input and feedback on possible challenges during the new school year.  He also met with principals to further discuss reopening plans.

Kinchen said there are many questions from both parents and staff that will be answered as the district moves forward, and stressed the need to stay “flexible and fluid”.
