BRENHAM BOARD DELAYS START OF SCHOOL BY 4 DAYS

The Brenham School Board approved delaying the start of this year’s school year for students by 4 days during their emergency meeting today (Tuesday).  For students, their first day back at school moves from August 19th to August 25th.  The delay does not affect teachers, as their first day back in the classroom remains at August 10th.  Interim Superintendent Huey Kinchen said that the delay will allow teachers more time to learn how to mitigate the spread of covid-19 and how teach their classes, both in person and on line.

Students will only have to make up one of the 4 days because of the extra minutes already built into the school day.  The extra day will be October 12th, originally a teacher in-service day, will now become an instructional day.  Brenham students will still have the option of attending class in a normal manner or staying home each 6 weeks and attending online classes.

In other action, the board approved the purchase of 50 internet hot spots from the Region IV ESC.  The hot spots come with a one year contract for service from AT&T and cost $240 each.  The school district will split the cost of the devices 50/50 of with the TEA.  Brenham only learned of the offer Monday, and the deadline for the purchase is next Monday.  The devices will be given to students who do not have internet at home and who meet certain criteria.
