Running from August 1st to 30th, the routine maintenance will be done to keep the water supply clean and minimize the potential of harmful bacteria growth.

City Water System Superintendent Matthew Monfreda said, although there are no indications of bacteriological contamination in the city’s water system, the maintenance is used to prevent nitrifying bacteria and biofilm from forming.  The water disinfection process will be changed from chloramines to free chlorine, which is a “stronger and faster-acting disinfectant”.

During this process, customers may see fire hydrants open throughout the city to allow flushing of the system. Once the flushing is complete, the system will return to normal operating conditions, which includes the standard process for blocking contaminations.

There may also be discoloration or cloudiness in the water, a chlorine taste or smell, or minor pressure fluctuations and air pockets. If this occurs, residents are asked to run the water through the tap until it runs clear.

Patients using tap water at home for kidney dialysis are encouraged to contact their doctor to see if any changes are necessary in their procedures. Customers using the water for aquariums should monitor chlorine residuals.
