According to Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Bryan Ruemke, a hazmat spill from a tanker truck carrying sodium hydroxide occurred near 16380 Highway 290 West, close to the National Welding Inspection School.

Burton and Brenham firefighters, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, EMS, Office of Emergency Management, DPS, and TxDOT all responded to the scene.

Ruemke said the trucking company had a hazmat contractor respond, and offloaded product from the damaged truck and cleaned up any product that was on the ground.

Westbound traffic on Highway 290 was diverted down Highway 237.  By mid afternoon the scene had been cleared.
