PVAMU VOTING TRIAL UNDERWAY

Virtual testimony has begun in a Waller County voter obstruction trial involving students at Prairie View A&M.

The trial, being held on Zoom due to the pandemic, is over accusations by Prairie View A&M students and alumni claiming county officials obstructed their rights to vote.

Students are claiming violations of their civil rights, claiming Waller County offer easily-accessible voting locations to “non-black and non-student voters, but not to the over 8,000 students—80 of whom were black.

An attorney for the NAACP says the case is “the latest in Waller County’s suppression of the political power of its black voters.”

A former student testified that students decided to “push back” after learning that on-campus early voting had been reduced from two weeks to two 12-hour sessions.

The defense says the county has “consistently provided early voting near campus since 2002.

The trial is scheduled to continue on Zoom throughout the week.
